There’s currently a demand for womens soccer team to be paid the same as the mens team, in the name of equal pay and all that. I came across a Forbes article running some numbers, but not going far enough in it’s analysis:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeozanian/2019/03/07/world-cup-soccer-pay-disparity-between-men-and-women-is-justified/
“As Dwight Jaynes pointed out four years ago after the U.S. women beat Japan to capture the World Cup in Vancouver, there is a big difference in the revenue available to pay the teams. The Women’s World Cup brought in almost $73 million, of which the players got 13%. The 2010 men’s World Cup in South Africa made almost $4 billion, of which 9% went to the players.
The men still pull the World Cup money wagon. The men’s World Cup in Russia generated over $6 billion in revenue, with the participating teams sharing $400 million, less than 7% of revenue. Meanwhile, the Women’s World Cup is expected to earn $131 million for the full four-year cycle 2019-22 and dole out $30 million to the participating teams.”
So if the total revenue generated by both teams during year of Russian world cup was $6,131,000,000 and women contributed $131,000,000 of that, then they contributed 2.1% of the total revenue. But are complaining about discrimination if they don’t earn the same as the team generating 97.9% of the revenue.
In the year for South African world cup women generated 1.8% of the revenue, to the males 98.2%
And they work from commission where the women already get a better rate than men (over 50% better).
Imagine if these were the numbers between two sales teams and the 1.9% of revenue was demanding the same pay as the 98.1% team. They would be laughed at in their face and fired. The absurdity if being paid by commission and then go on in national TV crying that you don’t get paid the same as the team generating 98.1% of the revenue is mind-boggling.
Not only that but if the womens team made $131 million in revenue and the men got paid $400 million in the Russian world cup, they’re asking to get paid THREE TIMES THE REVENUE THEY GENERATED! This isn’t even measuring profit… Talk about entitlement! And it’s not coming from the mens side.
Now imagine that the sales team that was generating 1.9% of the companies revenue wanted to earn more than three times the revenue the generated… That’s what’s happening.
